REAL Peru : August 6-16, 2010
We are excited to release the dates and details of our 2nd annual Summer trip to Northern Peru. REAL Peru is scheduled for August 6-16, 2010, and has limited space for only 16 guests. We chose Peru as our destination because of its consistent wind and waves, mild temperatures, and its raw, untamed beauty. Our 2009 REAL Peru trip scored some of the longest lefts in the world with great surfing and kitesurfing every single day. REAL Peru 2010 promises to be even better, with 10 days of sessions, and the best conditions, accommodations and food in the area. If you are looking for the ultimate kitesurfing and surfing destination holiday, REAL Peru will blow you off the travel map!

Wind
Northern Peru has consistent thermal winds that come up nearly every day around 12 noon. Each morning is glassy calm, then the wind fills in around 11:30am and builds throughout the day. August is one of the windiest and most consistent months of the year with an average of 30 days a month of 12m wind or windier! The average kite used by locals on strapped surfboards is a 9m, with 9-13m being the average for those riding twin tips. 30 days of wind in the month of August is probably the number one reason we made our decision to include Peru in our final round of destination choices. The waves of Peru were what sealed the deal and made it a “no brainer” decision…

Waves
** We recommend the Surf DVD “PEEL : The Peru Project” as the ultimate appetizer for this trip! PEEL is a great way to preview all the waves and culture you will experience during REAL Peru.

Peru is known around the world, both to kitesurfers and surfers, as home to some of the longest left hand breaking pointbreaks in the world. In fact, two of the worlds longest lefts, Chicama (worlds longest) and Pacasmayo (worlds 2nd longest), are both located in Northern Peru. These waves are world famous among surfers offering rides of over one mile in length, lasting over 4 minutes!

There are many other waves in Northern Peru with similar length and consistency, and many of these waves are kitesurfable every afternoon when the wind picks up. Wind angle varies from straight offshore to side onshore depending on the exact wind direction for each day and dialing into the perfect break for your sport of choice.

August is also one of the best months for wave size and swell consistency. Look at any surf history publication and you will see August to be the most consistent months for southern hemisphere south swell, which is what makes all of these magic points light up!

Weather
While Peru is in the southern hemisphere and August is technically “Winter”, northern Peru is located far enough north and close to the tropics to escape the chill of colder seasons. Average air temperatures in August are 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit, with temperatures dropping at night due to the dry, desert like climate. Shorts and t-shirts during the day and jeans and a sweatshirt at night will suffice. Average water temperatures are between 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit depending on where you are in the water (how far north(warmer) or south (cooler). The warmer days will see you in trunks and a wetsuit top where the coldest day will require a spring suit or short-sleeve fullsuit. For many kiters and surfers, this mild and breezy weather is a long awaited relief to the hot and humid weather found at home in August!

Who Should Go ?
The wind and waves of Northern Peru are best experienced by intermediate to expert level kiteboarders with ocean riding experience, and novice to expert level surfers.

Kite
For those of you interested in kiteboarding, the name of the game in Peru for kiting is “kitesurfing”, since that is what you are traveling to the longest lefts in the world for! All kitesurfing will be done in the open Pacific Ocean with winds ranging from side onshore to side offshore and the ability to find any of these three on any day, depending on your ability and preference. All of this same riding will almost always be in the waves as well, though nearly every wave is a pointbreak, allowing easy riding outside the break and then surfing on the way in.

For these reasons kiteboarders should have a solid background in ocean riding conditions. You can tune these riding skills and knowledge through:
The REAL Surf DVD
REAL Surf Camp
REAL Private Lessons

Beginner and Novice Kiteboarders should check out the REAL Zero 2 Hero and Evolution Camps in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Surf
For the surfers in the group, the breaks of Peru are famous around the world for their long groomed lines and never ending lefts. Most of these waves are pointbreaks, with easier paddle outs than heaving beachbreaks, making them more accessible to a wider range of surfer abilities. From softer, fatter waves, to tubing freight trains, it can all be found on the same day by driving up or down the coast. Our guide service will put you in the perfect place for your ability and surf lessons for any ability level will be available daily.

Activities throughout the trip include kitesurfing, surfing, and paddleboarding. Sports massage, yoga and other services are available onsite. The combination of perfect waves with lighter winds every morning and breezy conditions every afternoon, make Peru the perfect destination for a kite/surf trip!

Accommodations
The Peru travel experience can be an extremely varied one, from pitching a tent in a dusty, wind blown desert to living in 4 star accommodations right on the beach. Luckily we chose the latter, along with the same quality food and amenities, including an infinity pool that empties right into a peeling pointbreak lineup in our front yard!

Wake up each morning, have a coffee, surf the wave right out front or utilize our guide service to find any other wave of your choosing. Enjoy a delicious breakfast before surf session #2, then watch the wind fill in and build throughout the day. The afternoons are filled with your choice of kitesurfing or surfing (conditions available for both, every day) with lunch being served either on the fly at the beach, or waterfront at our 4 star base camp. Sessions #3-5 are on the fly, or again right out front of our accommodations, with dinner and drinks winding down the long day in the desert.

All accommodations are 4 star quality with a choice of private or shared, oceanfront or garden view villas. All beds are brand new, and have very comfortable Tempurpedic mattresses. All meals and beverages are included with our trip.

Travel Details
Many of us were under the impression that Peru was half a world away. But after viewing a world map, you realize that it is nearly directly south of North Carolina and a relatively easy destination to get to. With how good the wind and wave conditions are, it was relatively surprising how few people had made this trip in the past!
