Cape Hatteras

Summer in Hatteras has seen great kiting with an average of 5 days a week on the water. Many weeks saw 10-12 days straight on 8.9, 7.1 and 5.6 kites !! The air's been warm, 80-90 degrees with ocean in the high seventies and sound in the mid eighties. Two things that definitely took a quantum leap forward this summer were kiting in the surf and the ultra flat wakeboard slicks. The surf's been happening from north avon down around the point all the way to the hatteras ferry docks. Three riders even did a downwinder that whole distance including shooting Cape Point where the north and south atlantic meet and boost waves 20 feet plus into the air. Talk about the ultimate double up ! The flat water exploration has lead to finding some INSANE flatwater spots, we're talking sunrise oil that you would die for on a wakeboard. After you ride these spots, even the four inch chop in the sound begins to look big. Everyone's made the switch to wakes to take advantage of the super flatwater conditions. It's literally as flat as your best day ever behind a boat - no matter how hard it blows. We've been riding alot with a good crew - a lot of new talent. Llew Simmonds was going mental before he broke his ribs. 30 foot apehangers, full on wakeboard tricks, the works. He's on a mission. Sleezy J's killing it too, combining wakestyle tricks with 4 line big air. Nuzzi's been boosting on his new Airblasts, going for the titanic deadman ball grabs and backing it up with the wake tricks in the slicks.

Best time of the year to come to Hatteras is any time between mid March and mid November. It's a myth that summer doesn't blow here. A lot of times it's the best season of them all. We kite all winter too with the warmer days being in the 70's, but it just isn't as reliable (because of the temp) as in the spring, summer, fall. Flying in, even from New England, has become very popular because of how small the kite gear is. Fly into Norfolk, VA, rent a 4wd and you'll be in Hatteras in about two hours. The overall scene in Hatteras is really laid back with long days and early nights. There are an infinite number of launches so you never have to ride in a crowd. I've been riding here for three years and still find new spots every week. the Pamlico sound is 35 miles wide with most of it waist deep making it perfect for learning. The ocean offers sideshore conditions in ANY wind direction as the island turns and bends to accommodate all directions within a ½ hour drive.

People either rent houses as groups or families, rent hotels by themselves or camp at several nice campgrounds. Family activities include fishing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, golf, historical landmarks and museums, aquariums, parasailing, bike rentals, etc. Restaurant serving up the goods include the Madd Crabber for beers and shellfish, Hodads for good american food with a surf flair, Sea Robin for the breakfast with a water view and all you can eat seafood buffet, for a little more dough check out Labrador Oceanic Bistro and Austin Creek Grill. Another good breakfast/lunch hangout is the Orange blossom bakery in Buxton.
